Easy-to-learn application for creating 3D animations in After Effects

Three-dimensional animation is a highly practiced skill involving complex software and long render times. Many motion graphic artists and video editors struggle with 3D, trying to give clients a desired look while sticking to a tight budget or schedule.

ProAnimator 4 by Zaxwerks is tailored to video editors as it offers a familiar timeline structure and several well-designed yet customizable presets. ProAnimator is similar to Apple’s LiveType program because it can be used to create attractive text animations with near real-time results. The biggest difference is the text is 3D and can be customized to a much higher level.

ProAnimator also allows for both logos and shapes (saved as Adobe Illustrator files) to be imported and manipulated. Several 3D model formats can also be imported. The modeling and design features are similar to Zaxwerks’ 3D Invigorator; however, experienced After Effects users will feel at home with ProAnimator and may favor working with it instead.

With this release, After Effects integration is dramatically improved. The program can also run as an AE plug-in, allowing greater flexibility when designing rich motion graphics, but it runs faster as a standalone application. Additionally, the user can choose to track the 3D camera in AE for greater integration.

ProAnimator’s features are easy to access and responsive. The user adjusts Poses and Transitions, which are a behavior-based approach to animation. These elements can be combined or modified without keyframes. Pleasing results can be achieved with a few clicks, but advanced features exist for greater customization.

ProAnimator previews and renders quickly if you have a beefy graphics card. It’s a welcome addition in both editing suites and motion graphics stations as it adds eye-catching results without hurting the budget or the deadline.—Richard Harrington
