Xerox Announces 5 New Products: Promises Color for the Price of Black And White
Xerox Corporation is creating a wave of color for the office with five new multifunction products and printers, including two that feature a breakthrough in solid ink technology that for the first time makes color printing as affordable as black and white.
The product rollout includes the Xerox Phaser™ 8860 color printer and Xerox Phaser 8860MFP color multifunction printer – the first printers to feature the next generation of Xerox’s solid ink technology. Nearly five years in development, the new crayon-like ink sticks have been developed to last longer than ever before. By increasing the total number of color pages the ink sticks produce, Xerox has drastically reduced the price of color printing. When comparing the cost of the device and the ink, printing on the Phaser 8860 is two times less expensive than using equivalent laser printers from other manufacturers.
Designed for virtually any business with print volumes between 1,000 and 10,000 pages per month, the Phaser 8860 color printer and Phaser 8860MFP are ideal for customers – such as real estate agencies, marketing firms, design agencies and contractors – who depend on color for business proposals, collaterals and reports, as well as everyday documents such as e-mail, spreadsheets and more.
"Our customers told us that they want and need high-quality color printing to support their business, but that price was a barrier," said Ursula Burns, president of Xerox. "By focusing our research on advancements in solid ink, we can now make printing a page in color as inexpensive as black and white, and at total costs that are much lower than comparable printers from other companies. Now, businesses can take the locks off the color printer and depend on the affordable advantages of Xerox printers for all their printing needs – in any color. And, they can do it knowing the environmental advantages of solid ink significantly reduce waste."
With Xerox’s cartridge-free solid ink technology, the ink sticks, which are simply dropped into the color-coordinated ink trays, require minimal packaging and generate 90 percent less waste than comparable laser printers.
"The new Xerox cartridge-free solid inks are each only one-third the cost of the black supplies. What this means (and our tests confirmed) is that now – for perhaps the first time in the history of workgroup office color printing – you can print almost any document in full color on this desktop printer for the same cost as printing it in black and white," said David R. Spencer, President of the SpencerLab Digital Color Laboratory, which has independently tested the Phaser 8860.
Base pricing for the Phaser 8860 color printer and Phaser 8860MFP is $2,499 and $3,999, respectively. The black ink, with a yield of 14,000 pages, is $216. Each color ink stick, also yielding 14,000 pages, is only $72. Comparatively, the Hewlett-Packard Color LaserJet 4700dn printer is priced at $1,599, with a supplies cost of $178.99 for a black toner cartridge that yields 11,000 pages, and $253.99 for each color toner cartridge that yields 10,000 pages.
With print speeds as fast as 30 pages per minute in color and black and white, a 750 MHz processor and true Adobe PostScript3, the Phaser 8860 and Phaser 8860MFP produce color prints that are Pantone color approved, meaning the image quality matches the tough standards of Pantone’s color system. Automatic two-sided printing and N-up printing, which enables users to print multiple pages onto one, allow more images to fit on a single sheet of paper. In addition to these features, industry-leading optical character recognition (OCR) software in the MFP version of the Phaser 8860 allow documents to be scanned and converted to digital format, saving users both time and money.
More Xerox Technology Offers More Choices, More Color
Building on the industry’s broadest product portfolio that offers customers wide choices for their document needs, Xerox also launched today the Phaser 6180MFP color multifunction printer that prints at speeds as fast as 20 pages per minute in color and 31 ppm in black and white; and the Xerox WorkCentre™ 7232 and WorkCentre 7242 color multifunction printers, which offer print speeds as fast as 10 ppm in color, and 32 and 42 ppm in black and white, respectively.
The Xerox Phaser 6180MFP starts at $999, and features a 400MHz processor, 384MB of memory and a 950-sheet paper input capacity. With Xerox’s environmentally friendly Emulsion Aggregation High Gloss Toner, true Adobe PostScript3 and Pantone color, the Phaser 6180MFP produces high-quality prints in 600x600x4 dpi color output. The unit is easy to set-up and use with PrintingScout™, software that automatically sends users messages at their computers about the status of print jobs. It also includes CentreWare® Web printer management software, which allows IT administrators or office workers to remotely clone, configure and manage a fleet of systems. The multifunction printer also includes ID Card Copy, making it simple to copy both sides of a document, like an insurance card, onto a single sheet of paper.
Xerox’s new WorkCentre 7232/7242 are entry-level, color-capable multifunction products designed for small to mid-sized workgroups that rely on black-and-white printing but need color for some business applications. The systems offer two-sided copying and printing and a full range of color controls, such as Xerox Standard Accounting, which lets offices track use and set limits for their employees.
The WorkCentre 7200 series is enabled with Xerox’s Extensible Interface Platform™ (EIP), a Web-based platform that lets customers and developers quickly and easily create customized workflow applications. The line builds on the success of the WorkCentre 7132 for "color cautious" customers who print primarily in black and white but need the option of printing quality color.
Pricing for the WorkCentre 7232 and 7242 starts at $5,299 and $6,299, respectively.
