Working with Off-Camera Flash is Great!

Step Four

As we’ve now seen, a large soft light source can be employed to do a number of things. Comparatively speaking, a hard light isn’t a bad thing; it just may not be the best option. For example, I like this image from an earlier setup, where a bare flash was used to really isolate the subject. The hard light did this a lot more efficiently than we could have with the large umbrella still in place. Here, the hard light serves to create a more theatrical look with enhanced contrast and the feeling of a spotlight on the model.

In the end, it’s all about lighting to your taste and how best to tell your story. The important thing is going in armed with the proper tools and knowledge to best realize your vision.
