Small Flash: High-Speed Sync

Step Two

valind_flash_hss_2At an aperture of f/4, I can selectively blur away all of this boring background into something more pleasing. Combined with a faster shutter speed of 1/1600, we have tamed a rather bright afternoon. Here’s where our thought process diverges now that we have high-speed sync at our disposal. We still need to add a strobe to light our model’s face. In the past we’d have had to do some quick photographer math to get an equal exposure but with a shutter speed under 1/250. This would be in the neighborhood of f/11 at 1/200 to sneak in under our camera’s max. sync speed. At f/11, that undesirable background would be rendered just about as sharp as our model is, which would be very distracting. Fortunately, we’re no longer tied by those archaic bonds of sync speed and shutter caps.
