On Location: Create a Vintage Surfer Portrait on the Beach

Step Four

Vintage Surfer PortraitTo add some layering and depth to the background, I placed another flash behind Stray aimed at the kayaks to his left. Since I didn’t have light stands, I put the flash under some rope on a post to secure it. I zoomed the head to 70mm to get a wide spread of light on the kayaks. This SB-900 was set to group B, separate from my main flash, which was on group A. Both flashes were in TTL mode. A test shot revealed I needed to power up my A flash one stop to get the right exposure on Stray. The increased color and illumination of the kayaks brought more life to the shot, but I still felt the background could have more life. Time to break out another SB-900.
