Lighting for Weddings: Using Off-Camera Flash to Conquer Stage Lighting During the Reception

Step Two

off camera flash wedding receptionOf course, using your on-camera flash would be a cop-out, so let’s get to work! Stick two off-camera flashes (I like the LumoPro LP160s) on light stands with umbrella swivels and a radio trigger (I prefer RadioPopper JrXs). The key here is to use stands that go up at least 15′, and bring them up as high as you can next to the stage lights on either side. Why so high? The higher you raise them, the more you’ll minimize flaring into your lens, and you want to mimic the lighting created by the stage lights.
