Using Illustrator Palettes As Calculators

In an InDesign tip a while back, I mentioned that many users don’t know that the palettes can be used as calculators. Well, this is also true in Illustrator and many other graphics applications. If you’d like to increase the width of an object by 1¼” type +.1.25″ after the current width and hit Return (or Enter). The same method can be used for subtraction (-), multiplication (*), and division (/). If the current measurements are in inches and you’d like to add 36 points, go right ahead. Illustrator is a math wiz. Just type +36 pt after the current measurement and hit Return or Enter. There’s no tripping up this math wiz. You can also type 36 pt + before your current measurement and it still works.
