I have had the same problem with friends asking how to open new cameras RAW files in an old version of Photoshop. I suggested that they use the free DNG converter first and then open the DNG file. The response has been positive claiming that it does work.
Speaking of using the DNG converter for new cameras in older versions of Photoshop, Matt Kloskowski just released a video today in the NAPP members area explaining my comment above. Look for Convert to DNG for RAW Support.
