RC has the new Fireworks CS4 beta and he takes it out for a little test drive.

  • Anyone interested in checking out new versions of Fireworks, Dreamweaver, or Soundbooth can go to Adobe Labs and download a free beta version
  • Fireworks is great for creating web mockups. The new version is sporting a redesigned interface
  • Test out some new features in Fireworks. Drag out a solid color box and try the new gradient editor
  • Notice the new guides that show up when you move objects around
  • You can combine multiple objects and match their width and height
  • Combine paths to create one object
  • You can import graphics from Photoshop and create clipping masks
  • Turn your layout into a master page that can be reapplied throughout your design
  • Export your project in PDF format and get an idea for how it will work
  • Keep an eye on Layers website for new content about Fireworks CS4 beta.

Corey revisits using symbols in Illustrator and how they are editable, like smart objects.

  • Open a new document in Illustrator and type out some text
  • Apply a graphic style and then save the objects as a new symbol
  • Use the pen tool to draw a shape around the text symbol
  • Select both objects
  • Go to the Envelope Distort command and choose Make with Top Object
  • The text symbol will conform and adjust to the shape of the object you created on top
  • If you want to make changes to the text, you can double click on the object twice and you will be able to adjust the text
  • Make you changes and Illustrator will re-distort the text to fit into the shape object on top
