Small Flash Tutorial: Working with High Shutter Speed and Flash

Step Three

We have our tight composition, our flash is in place, and the light output is focused on target. So, let’s crank up the speed! One of the neat things about shooting at high speeds is the ability to capture something we miss with the naked eye. An explosion of sand is a blur when seen in real time, but it transforms into a wave of still motion when photographed at 1/8000.

To trigger the flash, I used a combination of PocketWizard Mini and Flex units, unique for their ability to enable flash syncing throughout the entire shutter-speed range. I then manually set the flash to full power and started firing away.
