I am still confused about fill flash. I understand that it is desired to reduce the flash. However, numerous resources on the internet point out that Canon cameras automatically apply fill flash reduction _when they decide to do so_, and the strength of this reduction depends on the ambient light brightness. Maybe it is clever but does not sound predictable. I do not like it very much. How am I supposed to know when the automatic reduction takes place?

Additional reduction of the flash output would add up to the automatic reduction. You start playing with the FEC and the decisive moment is over... Apparently some cameras had a custom function to inactivate this inconvenient automatic cleverness. My 5D mark II does not...

Should I always shoot in manual exposure mode on bright sunny days? But I am not even sure if also then the ETTL cleverness would be messing with my flash settings...

Fill in flash is something I often read about. I have not used it often enough. I will make a point of using a diffuser on my 580 flash. Is this pointed at the subject of away?
