First, the tips you gave were new...not the usual...crop 1/3s, golden rule, etc. and two, you are right about photography getting to be an extremely competitive field. I try not to think about it and schedule myself a couple of half days a week for shooting and a couple of more to work on my computer (darkroom). It is like exercise, a small % are Olympic athletes...working out 100s of hours a week...the rest of us that want to stay "fit" just need to be consistent and work out our "photo" muscles every week.
