Thank you for this post! I was trying to add captions to a vid for a website where I knew people would potentially be viewing the vid at work where there was no audio facilities. This helped me out a lot thank you.

Hello Lee,
thanks for the article. Very helpful.
Is there any ways to create a similar component to use within an fla for export to swf (without having to turn it into an FLV)?
I am trying to get the XML file to communicate with cue points on my .fla timeline, but it doesnt seem to work.
Maybe you have a suggestion on what direction to take?

Hi.. can I ask you questions? what does publish mean in flash and where should we locate or save the xml file? do we need to import it to flash or something? coz I have created a flv with caption. when I pressed the ctrl + enter, the caption would show up, but when I finally saved it in swf file format and tested it, the caption didnt show up..

1087: Syntax error: extra characters found after end of program.

I’m having a few problems. I’m using Flash CS4 and it doesn’t like the captions.xml file I get VideoError: 1005: Invalid xml: URL: “captions.xml” Root node not smil
at fl.video::SMILManager/http://www.adobe.com/2007/flash/flvplayback/internal::xmlLoadEventHandler()
at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction()
at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent()
at flash.net::URLLoader/onComplete()

Also I get the line above if I try to compile the xml file

Adobe PhotoShop has released a free online version Adobe PhotoShop Express – http://www.frogmix.com/search/Adobe+PhotoShop+Express . It is only available to the US as yet, which peeves me, so all I can tell you is that it is a cut down and simpler to use version of Photoshop.

You can use this same component to controll the fonts and placement of the text for a real custom feel
